Manchester United get biggest Ivan Toney transfer hint yet as bombshell dropped
Ivan Toney’s surprising absence from Brentford’s starting lineup for the first Premier League match of the season has been confirmed by manager Thomas Frank to be linked to ongoing transfer speculation, with Manchester United rumored to be interested.
Despite attempts to strengthen their attacking options over the summer, Manchester United, under Erik ten Hag, began the new Premier League season with limited choices up front. Joshua Zirkzee, who scored United’s late winner in their opener against Fulham, is currently the only available striker, as Rasmus Hojlund is set to miss the early weeks of the season. This has reportedly prompted United’s recruitment team, led by Dan Ashworth, to revisit the possibility of signing another forward, with Toney’s name coming up once again amid long-standing transfer rumors.

“There’s a lot happening with Ivan, including some transfer interest. Because of that, we decided not to involve him in the squad,” Frank explained to Sky Sports about Toney’s exclusion from Sunday’s match against Crystal Palace. “It’s the typical situation—I couldn’t reveal too much beforehand. Ivan has been fantastic for us, but as we proved last season, we can manage without him.”
When asked if this could signal the end of Toney’s time at Brentford, Frank responded, “Who knows? There’s interest, but nothing is close yet.” Toney, who netted 20 goals in 33 appearances during the 2022/23 season, has one year left on his contract with Brentford, who are reportedly holding firm on a £60 million valuation. Along with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with Toney, and a move to Saudi Arabia is rumored to be on the table, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Al-Ahli has added him to their shortlist this month.
