It is time for Team Europe to meet Team World in the 2024 Laver Cup, so The Tennis Gazette looks into everything you need to know including how to watch live on TV.
The Laver Cup has been a huge feature of the tennis schedule since 2017 with men’s players convening to represent Europe and the world. It even also became an official ATP Tour event in May 2019 but it does not return any ranking points for the players who agree to take part.
A total of 12 players contest the Laver Cup with six representing Europe and six representing the rest of the world. Tennis legend Roger Federer also proposed creating the Laver Cup and named it after Rod Laver. Golf’s Ryder Cup inspired its creation so tennis had a similar event.
Yet the 2024 Laver Cup is a bittersweet affair for Federer as it marks the final time that Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe will serve as the captains of Team Europe and Team World. The pair have captained the two teams every time, but Yannick Noah and Andre Agassi will take over.
McEnroe will hope to bow out as the captain of Team World with a third consecutive win as two-time defending Laver Cup champions. They are the only times that Team World have so far won the Laver Cup, with Team Europe winning the first four editions of the annual event.
So, with that in mind, The Tennis Gazette looks through everything you need to know about the 2024 edition of the Laver Cup from which players are taking part to how to watch live…
The top three-ranked players for Team Europe and Team World are automatically invited to play at the Laver Cup, with the remaining three spots available on the teams captain’s picks.
Each player at the Laver Cup will feature in at least one singles match, while also available to contest doubles matches. But no player can contest more than two singles games and while at least four players must play doubles, the same pairing cannot play more than one match.
The first team to reach 13 points wins the Laver Cup with one point available each game on Friday, rising to two points a game on Saturday and then three points a game on Sunday. An overtime doubles game will decide the Laver Cup if it is a draw once all 12 games are played.
The 2024 Laver Cup will take place from Friday, September 20 to Sunday, September 22. All games are held over a day session starting at 13:00 CEST (07:00 EDT, 04:00 PDT) followed by a night session starting at 19:00 CEST (13:00 EDT, 10:00 PDT) on Friday and Saturday. Sunday only features a day session, which starts at 12:00 CEST (06:00 EDT or 03:00 PDT).
Hosting duties for the Laver Cup rotate between Team Europe and Team World, so the 2024 edition is in Europe with Berlin, Germany chosen as the host city. It marks the first time that Berlin has held a Laver Cup after Prague, Chicago, Geneva, Boston, London and Vancouver.
The Laver Cup has also selected the Uber Arena in the Friedrichshain neighborhood of Berlin as its host venue. It is a multipurpose indoor arena, which cost €165m (£184m) to construct. The Eisbaren Berlin hockey team and Alba Berlin basketball team also call Uber Arena home.
Team Europe and Team World must respectively submit six players to contest the Laver Cup before the tournament starts. Rafael Nadal was originally due to represent Team Europe in Berlin but withdrew from the Laver Cup as the Spaniard was not in the right state physically.
Team World even lost two of their original nominees when Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul withdrew from the Laver Cup due to injuries. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner ruled themselves out of appearing at the Laver Cup months in advance to focus elsewhere.

Team World defended their maiden Laver Cup title at the 2023 edition in Vancouver, Canada with a 13-2 thrashing of Team Europe. It marked the second-biggest winning margin to date after Team Europe’s 14-1 victory against Team World in Boston, Massachusetts, US in 2021.
While ranking points are not on offer to the ATP Tour players featuring at the Laver Cup, the tournament provides guaranteed appearance fees based on their rankings. Players from the winning team earn $250,000 each in prize money for lifting the Laver Cup, while players for the losing team earn $125,000 each, with the total prize pool for the tournament $2.25m.
