India’s World Cup team 2023 finalized

The BCCI senior national selection committee has announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. KL Rahul has secured a place in the team, while Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Prasidh Krishna did not make the cut. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, met with Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid in Sri Lanka following the India vs. Pakistan Asia Cup match in Kandy, which was interrupted by rain after the first innings. Samson, Varma, and Krishna, who are currently part of the Asia Cup squad, were left out of the World Cup lineup.

Rohit Sharma will captain the World Cup squad, and Ishan Kishan has earned his place in the team following his strong performances in the middle order. The batting lineup includes Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav. The squad features allrounders such as Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur, emphasizing batting depth.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack in the bowling department, while spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also made the cut.

Rahul’s fitness was a topic of discussion, and after receiving clearance from the medical team, he was included in the World Cup squad. Rahul, likely to take on the wicketkeeping role, had been recovering from a right thigh surgery and had been out of action for three and a half months.

The BCCI had a September 5 deadline to submit the final World Cup squad to the ICC but opted to hold the selection committee meeting on September 4 following Rahul’s clearance. Sanju Samson was picked as a backup option due to Rahul’s earlier injury, as mentioned by Agarkar in a previous press conference.

As previously indicated by Agarkar, the World Cup squad was selected from the 18-member Asia Cup squad, and there were no major surprises in the final selection.
