Frances Tiafoe to face Taylor Fritz in US Open semifinals, guaranteeing an American man will reach the final.
American men have not won a grand slam singles title since Andy Roddick won one at the 2003 US Open, but chances are this dry spell could come to an end this weekend.
There will be an American man in a grand slam singles final for the first time since 2009. Frances Tiafoe has ensured this after reaching the semifinals of the US Open. Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov retired his fourth round quarterfinal match against Tiafoe, ranked No. 9 in the world, at 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 4-1 due to injury.
On Friday, he will face Taylor Fritz, another American, in the semifinals. Fritz, the new American No 12 and top seed, reached his first major quarterfinal by winning 7-6 (72), 3-6, 64, 7-6 (73).
